Ted Turner to salute Kofi Annan, outgoing UN Secretary-General

New York, NY: On Tuesday, October 10, 2006, Special Guest Speaker Ted Turner will address the United Nations Association of the USA and the Business Council for the United Nations, along with more than 700 hundred diplomats and VIPs, regarding the influence of outgoing United Nations Secretary-General Kofi A.  Annan on the UN and the world.  The dinner event will honor former President Bill Clinton and Innovator Dean Kamen with the United Nations Association of the USA's 2006 Global Leadership Awards.

Guests, including: John C. Whitehead, Isabella Rossellini, Whoopi Goldberg, Angelique Kidjo, Julia Ormond, Liya Kebede and Anna Cataldi, will celebrate the achievements of these two great humanitarians.

Every year, the United Nations Association of the USA honors individuals for outstanding leadership in furthering the purposes of the United Nations Charter. This year, the United Nations Association of the USA is proud to honor President Clinton with the Global Leadership Award and science and technology advocate Kamen with the Global Humanitarian Action Award. The black-tie gala will be held at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City and will feature Wynton Marsalis as the musical guest.

In addition to the award recipients, the evening's Honorary Guest will be Secretary-General Annan. Distinguished Guests for the evening will include many of the permanent representatives to the UN. The Mistress of Ceremonies will be award-winning newscaster Charlayne Hunter-Gault. President of the United Nations Association of the USA, Ambassador William H. Luers will join dinner chairs Frank Giustra, William J. McDonough, John C. Whitehead and Josh S. Weston in overseeing the evening.

"President Clinton is being honored for his groundbreaking work around the world to cope with the HIV/AIDS pandemic and for his leadership in tackling major threats to humanity, from poverty to global warming," said William H. Luers, President of the United Nations Association of the USA. "Dean Kamen is being honored for his innovative work to change lives in the developing world on a daily basis."
