THE HONORABLE LEONORE ANNENBERG & MS. ANGELINA JOLIE TO BE HONORED AT THE UNITED NATIONS ASSOCIATION-USA
AT 2005 AWARDS DINNER

New York, NY, September 28, 2005: The United Nations Association of the USA (UNA-USA) has announced the recipients of their 2005 Global Leadership Award and 2005 Global Humanitarian Action Award.  The honor is given for outstanding leadership by an individual or organization in furthering the purpose and principles underpinning the United Nations, as inscribed in its charter.

The Honorable Leonore Annenberg will be honored with the 2005 Global Leadership Award for a lifetime spent working to advance the global publics well-being through her support for education, the arts and culture, science and health, as well as community and civic affairs. Ms. Angelina Jolie will be honored with the 2005 UN Global Humanitarian Action Award for her work as Goodwill Ambassador for the UN High Commission for Refugees. Ms. Jolie has been an advocate for the protection of refugees of five continents since her appointment to the post in August, 2001. In addition to her fieldwork, Ms. Jolie has become a highly regarded activist for refugee rights, arguing for their protection before senior political and economic leaders of the world.  As an Academy Award winning actress and mother of two adopted children, Ms. Jolie has used her fame to draw attention to the plight of refugees worldwide.

The Awards presentation will take place during a black tie dinner to be held in New York City at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel on Tuesday, October 11, 2005.  The honored guest of the evening will also include UN Secretary-General Kofi A. Annan and the Permanent Representatives to the United Nations.  The Honorary Chairs for the evening are former presidents: Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, George H. W. Bush and William J. Clinton. Also attending will be UNA-USA Co-Chairmen Rajat K. Gupta and John S. Weston, and UNA-USA President, William H. Luers.

UNA-USA President, William H. Luers, said, “The works of this year’s award recipients are both broad-reaching and reflects the basic needs of our world.  Leonore Annenberg has kept vibrant the promise of the Annenberg Foundation focus on education, health and the arts and Ms. Jolie has been tireless in her efforts in advancing the needs of refugees in such a way as to humanize this global crisis.”

Past recipients of the UNA-USA’s Global Leadership Award include Bill & Melinda Gates for their foundation’s world immunization work, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Sir & Lady Paul McCartney, Secretary of State Colin Powell, as former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff: the late Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin: Senator John Glenn: the Rockefeller family: and CNN founder Ted Turner, who used the occasion of his award in 1997 to announce his one billion dollar gift to U.N. Programs.

In addition to her work with the refugee populations, Angelina Jolie is being recognized for her efforts in drawing attention to AIDS and in finding solutions to ending poverty, hunger and disease. In a recent trip to Kenya, Ms. Jolie joined Millennium Project Director, Jeffrey Sachs, in creating a documentary demonstrating solutions to ending poverty.  The program was viewed by millions and has inspired people to get involved in these global issues.
